Consider the Plus-Size Male Model…

With all the buzz in the media lately about the emergence of the plus-size model, it seems the debate and/ or celebration has been focused on female models. But, of course, body image issues aren’t just limited to women.

The latest issue of Fantastic Man, an indie men’s fashion magazine, contains a photo spread featuring less-than-waif-like men, complete with bellies, chunky arms, and rounded bums.  “A series of stylistic suggestions for bold summer fashions to be worn by gentlemen of quite marvelous shape,” reads the shoot’s subhead.

One of FM’s founders, Jop van Bennekom (who has taken a break from publishing Butt Magazine) said in an interview, “There wasn’t a magazine out there—a men’s magazine—that felt contemporary and for us. We couldn’t identify with all the models being used in magazines, all the 12-year-olds . . ..”

Is the body image debate just as relevant for male models? Should there be more attention on plus-size male models? Does a man’s beer belly count as “sexy curves?”

What do you think?

I love it! I think it’s a great move forward for men as a whole.
