Dove’s “Ad Makeover” Campaign

April 27, 2012 / 0 Comments

We’re already fans of Dove’s “Real Beauty” campaign which started in 2004 and makes use of real women with real bodies as models. The campaign showcases Dove products, but it also works to boost women’s self-esteem.

Dove’s latest campaign, “The Ad Makeover,” combats the negative advertisements women are confronted with every day. Specifically, Dove targets those annoying, ubiquitous ads that pop up on the side of your computer screen that scream at you about your “jelly rolls” or “muffin tops”.  Dove invites women to go online and create alternative, empowering ads.

As a result, women will be able to see colourful, positive body-image ads alongside their profiles.

In related news, a recent study discovered that actively engaging in negative talk about one’s body causes a definite increase in depression over time. This study inspired a writer at Styleist.com to start an “I Promise To Stop Saying Negative Things About My Body Jar”. Any time someone made a negative body comment in the office about, they were fined $1, with proceeds going to Girls Inc.
