Plies and pirouettes

October 27, 2013 / 0 Comments

A new three-part documentary filmed by Channel 4, which aims to break taboos around weight, will follow a plus-size group aiming to stage the classic ballet Swan Lake.

The idea behind the show is to challenge the notion that a person has to be size zero to be a ballerina, also aiming to break the taboos surrounding weight. “Ballet is a place where body fascism exists in a way that is not really allowed anywhere else.” Their mentor is Wayne Sleep who was once told by the Royal Ballet that he was too short to be a dancer.

We’re all looking forward to watching the show and to see the final performance. With no release date yet we’re keeping our eyes and peeled for when this hits our TV screens.
