Denise Bidot – Plus size model

February 27th, 2015 12:30 pm

If you haven’t heard of Denise Bidot yet, you sure will see a lot more of her in the near future.  She’s currently breaking new  ground for Plus size models across the globe, becoming the first plus size model to grace the catwalk at New York Fashion week and is known for her work with straight and plus-size brands such as Forever 21, Target, Zizi, Levi’s, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Old Navy and Lane Bryant.

Denise sat down with Cosmo mag and Sophie Simmons, the 22-year-old designer behind Sophie x TheStyleClub (More info here), to talk about body image, confidence and the plus size fashion industry.

You can view the video below where Bidot discusses how plus-size models have to fit ideal body types, and how her mother, and being a mother herself has had an impact on her views regarding her own body image.

During her interview Bidot gave her strong views of the term ‘plus size’:

“I think other people have a problem with [the term ‘plus-size’] more than I do. I don’t care what you call me. I’m glad to even have a place in this fashion industry. Plus-size, straight-size, in-betweenie — I don’t care regardless. I’m just a woman. I’m a curvy woman, and hopefully some day they do end up cutting out the word plus-size. But, for right now it’s nice to just have a section for us.”

We couldn’t agree more with Denise’s opinion regarding the term ‘plus size’ and encouraging a healthy idea of body confidence in all women, no matter their shape or size. We admire Denise’s own confidence and the amazing influence she has on the plus size industry right now.

NYFW – Diversity

February 24th, 2015 12:36 pm

Fashion weeks across the globe are the platforms for designers to showcase next season’s collections to the press, buyers and the public. But this New York Fashion Week, the biggest trend to emerge from the catwalk was diversity. We’re hoping this isn’t a passing phase that gets swept away next season, but something that is set to continue, with fashion pushing the boundaries of what we consider “the norm.” NYFW is setting a high mark by welcoming participants and models of many backgrounds to the catwalk this season. The runways are seeing more ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, sizes and abilities than ever before.

Last year, plus size model Denise Bidot made history as one of the first plus size models to walk for straight size designers when she modelled for the brand CHROMAT. Their runway show on Saturday again featured plus-size models Denise Bidot and our Simply Be model Joss as well as trans gender women and girls from all ethnicities. Becca McCharen, the brands founder was quoted saying ‘I’m so against all white, straight, skinny girl runways. That just doesn’t reflect my reality and who I am and who the Chromat woman is.’ The whole collection, she said, was inspired by Martine Rothblatt, a trans gender woman who is America’s highest paid female CEO.

Kanye West’s x Adidas NYFW show saw 50 assembled men and women – standing in rows, dressed in Yeezy Boost footwear by Adidas – but looking like no other catwalk seen at New York. There were standard tall and slim white models, but there were also wide-hipped, curvy short girls; black models with teased-out afros and bleached dreads; Asian, Latino and mixed race girls and boys of all shapes and colours.

Carrie Hammer made NYFW history by casting American Horror Story actress and disability advocate Jamie Brewer for her Spring Summer 15 show. Dressed in a cinched black skirt dress Jamie raised her arms in triumph as she walked down the runway. She certainly had good reason to, she is now in the record books as the first woman with Down Syndrome to walk in NYFW.

Models in wheelchairs and the world’s first male amputee also hit the catwalk this season at The FTL Moda’s AW15 show. Named FTL Moda Loving You, the show was held in collaboration with Fondazione Vertical – an Italian foundation supporting research to find a cure for spinal cord injuries. London-based agency Models of Diversity, were also involved.

Overall this season , NYFW achieved one heck of an accomplishment.  But the question is,  why not go a step further and inject a number of different shaped, sized and coloured models throughout all fashion weeks and seasons?  The result would be inspiring, controversial and empowering. With Paris and Milan Fashion weeks still to come this season, we’re hoping designers will follow the NYFW example and allow for more diversity when choosing the models for their catwalks.

White Label Spring Summer 15 is Here

February 6th, 2015 4:24 pm

Anna takes us to all four corners of the Earth with her White Label collection for Spring Summer 2015. Appropriately named Wanderlust, let this collection help you escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world as Anna draws global inspiration from the traditional, the cultural and the vintage. We have luscious leopard prints, a cultural henna design, our exclusive Oli print and many more that adorn beautiful silks and jerseys in flattering styles.

The Anna Scholz team took off to sunny Majorca for a holiday with twist. Whilst enjoying the sunshine they shot the SS15 campaign, which I’m sure you’ll agree, looked amazing.  Our model , the lovely Gina looked fantastic in all of the outfits and we couldn’t be happier with the brochure images that were taken by Mindy Coe which you can view here.

We styled the shoot with metallic transfer tattoos by Divine Ink, which complimented the prints and styles perfectly. Cliff and his wife Sharon joined the team and everyone was thankful for her amazing cooking throughout the shoot, including the delicious stuffed peppers. Just looking at the picture makes everyone hungry in the office. Of course the holiday was all work and very little play, but we’re sure you’ll agree the images and collection look great. It certainly makes us want to travel away for the sunshine and head to the beach.

You can check out more images of their time in Majorca, by checking out the behind the scenes shots here

Keep your eyes peeled as we will be releasing Black label previews next week, but for now you can shop White Label online here.

Let us know where you are heading on holidays to and show off your Anna Scholz outfits in the sun using the hashtag #ASholidayoutfits on your Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. and we’ll share our favourites
